David Byrne’s Art Project… but only for a little while.
Why? So David Byrne spent his own money designing and manufacturing a series of nine fun bike racks. They’ve just been installed, but will come down in eleven months because they’re considered an “art project” and “art projects” can’t remain on public land indefinitely without approval by the city’s Public Design Commissions. Why not just consider them BIKE RACKS and leave them up permanently? Doesn’t make any sense. Utilitarian objects can’t be nicely designed?
Nice Rack.
The Finalists in the NYC bike rack competition have ben announced. I really like the beetlelab racks.
A-list cyclists
Just incase you were afraid to ride you bike around town because it wasn’t fashionable.
Fear no more! The wealthy and famous have now said it was ok. Now I can finally sleep at night!
Cycling has hit the big time
The NY Post has put a who’s who of bike options on Page Six… too bad their “track bike” has gears.

Summer Streets Are Here!
Beginning Aug 9 (today) and for two additional Saturdays (16 & 23) the city will be closing down Park Ave and connecting streets from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park (7am - 1pm only). This should be an interesting experiment. I really hope it works and will be continued and expanded. It would be fantastic to be able to ride from Brooklyn to Central Park without the fear of being run down by a cyclist hating driver. My main concern of Summer Streets is it becoming a street fair with thousands of people just milling about eating funnel cakes. I hope that you will still be able to ride/run/roller blade etc without problems. Only time will tell.
Be Civil. Please.
“After years of federal and local spending on bike routes and other amenities, most cities are ready to handle more cyclists. But many motorists simply don’t see their two-wheeled brethren or, when they do, find them aggravating. Managing more cyclists is going to take more than new bike paths or fresh stripes on the roads. It looks as though there is a need, on both sides, for a revolution in manners.”
An excerpt from another article about how the skyrocketing popularity of bicycling being fueled by high gas prices is causing problems, this time from the Economist. Includes a number of examples of the problems associated with the bicycle’s new found popularity, and in classic Economist style, it’s fair and balanced.
David Byrne is awesome.
I want to go on a bike ride with David Byrne.
Tips for Bicycle Commuting
Commute by Bike has a good list of things you can do in increase eye contact with drivers, which will make you safer.
The Boulevard of Death
Street Films video: Queens Boulevard: Complete Street Campaign Rally
Queens blvd is insanely dangerous for pedestrains, cyclists & drivers. I lived over there for a brief moment in time and crossing the street was like holding hands with the devil. The entire county of Queens is not very bike/pedestrian friendly.
Occasionally, I think maybe I should move to Queens. The rents are affordable and Jackson Heights has some pretty kick-ass Dosa, but then I think I’d rather not die on my commute to work.
